JERUSALEM: Israel has again rejected calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza even as US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says Washington was working toward a ceasefire in Gaza that was ‘durable and sustainable’.

Khaled Meshaal, Hamas’s political leader, has called for an uprising against Israel after an unprecedented attack on the Gaza Strip killed at least 220 Palestinians and wounded 700 more.
