Ossetia as botched Balkans replay
by Nebojsa Malic

Six days ago, as most of the world was watching the opening ceremonies of the Olympics in Beijing, Georgian troops attacked the self-proclaimed Republic of South Ossetia. Russia quickly intervened, ousting Georgian forces from the region and attacking Georgian military bases. Despite the training and weapons supplied by the U.S. and Israel, the Georgian military quickly collapsed. President Mikheil Saakashvili, installed in power in 2003 by a CIA-sponsored “Rose Revolution,” pleaded for help from his patrons, painting himself and his country as victims of “Russian aggression.” Aside from empty words of encouragement and hypocritical condemnation of Russian “excessive force,” the Empire had no help to give.

In the modern world you cant wage a war just with your tanks and planes.

You have to use media. In Germany during WWII they would say “Truth is not what happened, truth is what we tell people”.

At Largely: Um, Al Qaeda #2 dead… now, on the same day…

Larisa Alexandrovna

…As we hear about the alleged Anthrax killer? Not yesterday, or the day before, or a year ago, or two, three, four, five years ago… no, today… just now:

(CBS) Ayman al-Zawahiri - the second most powerful leader in al Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden’s No. 2 - may be critically wounded and possibly dead, CBS News chief foreign affairs correspondent Lara Logan reports exclusively.

CBS News has obtained a copy of an intercepted letter from sources in Pakistan, which urgently requests a doctor to treat al-Zawahiri. He’s believed to be somewhere in Pakistan’s remote tribal areas of Pakistan.

The letter refers to Sheikh Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri by name - and says that he is in “severe pain” and his “injuries are infected.”

Oh wait, best part:

However, CBS News has not been able to confirm the authenticity of Baitullah Mehsud’s signature and seal.

The letter is dated July 29 - one day after a U.S. air strike that killed al Qaeda weapons expert Abu Khabab al-Masri, and five other Arabs in South Waziristan.

If you have not been able to confirm it then why the hell are you reporting it? Anyone? Osama? Anyone? My guess is that Lara rang up her editor and said that she has gotten a document which she is now trying to substantiate, which the editor took and ran, ran, ran with. I may be entirely covered in tin-foil at this point, but this is one hell-of-a-coincidence.

As part of its ongoing “Black in America” project, CNN posted a story to its website earlier this week titled “Could an Obama presidency hurt black Americans?” Credited to CNN correspondent John Blake, the piece quotes the wit and wisdom of Steve Sailer, identified only as “a columnist for The American Conservative magazine.”
