Neoconservative historian and writer Michael Ledeen has left the American Enterprise Institute, his intellectual base for almost two decades, Mother Jones has learned. The decision for Ledeen, a veteran of the Iran contra affair, and AEI to part ways “has been in the works for a while” an associate who confirmed the recent departure describes. (Ledeen is no longer listed among the think tank’s scholars).

After pulling together the materials for my previous post, I became increasingly convinced that, no matter who actually sent the anthrax letters, both Neil Livingstone and James Woolsey have been deeply implicated in pushing the Iran-anthrax-al Qaeda link and in profiting from the War on Terror. I therefore started checking to see what else I could find to link these two gentlemen to each other, particularly in a context of counter-terrorism profiteering.

On June 12, 2005, acting on a request from US authorities, officials from Mexico’s Federal Investigation Agency arrested Arif Ali Durrani as he was leaving the restaurant he ran in a shopping mall in the Mexican border town of Playas de Rosarito, near the San Diego-Tijuana border. Ordered deported back to his native Pakistan, Durrani, then 55, soon found himself on a plane whose intermediate stop was Los Angeles. There at Los Angeles International Airport on June 15, 2005, officials with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement bureau intercepted his plane, arrested Durrani, and took him into custody. The warrant accused him of two counts of violating the Arms Export Control Act for selling fighter-jet parts to Iran.

It’s instructive to read the recent Senate Select Committee on Intelligence report on the 2001-2003 meetings between Pentagon officials and Iran contra figures Michael Ledeen and Manucher Ghorbanifar, side by side with the 2007 memoir of former CIA director George Tenet, At the Center of the Storm (Harper Collins, 2007, pp. 311-313). Indeed, doing so fills in a few details that were redacted in the Senate report, and amplifies others.
