You might be interested to know that Christian Bleuer, whose work Noah Schachtman based his article on, not only blogs at Ghosts of Alexander but is also a contributor to Complex Terrain Laboratory. He's a pretty sharp commentator on Afghanistan.

I don't think that any country that would go into Afghanistan (or Iraq or Iran or Latin America, you get the drift) does it because they are helping. They have weapons and soldiers/mercenaries to trade in. It's no different than any of the other countries currently involved in "helping" in the area.
Somebody is making a hell of a lot of money, or it wouldn't be done.

Number 1, Russia is not helping Afghanistan and helping in the war against the Taliban, it is helping its self, that’s unless they are not getting any money for supplying Afghanistan weapons for free, if not and they do get money, it means that they don’t give a sh-t, and only are so called helping for money for more weapon sales.
So what it means is that Russia, need more weapons sales, after china stoped buying so many weapons, so after that, they lost 60% of weapon sales, and will supply any one for money, they are not helping the US in Afghanistan, they are helping sales of weapons to get more money to start up the old Soviet Union, along with all the hi gas / petrol prices and new market. they will slow turn on the west over the next 15 years, & we will see the old cold war times 2,,, china/ Russia twice as bad, then you will see America’s markte full a part.
