Shorter Question Everything

Zimbabwe

  • A secret airstrip is being built in a diamond field illegally seized by the Zimbabwean army 14 months ago which would enable clandestine weapons shipments.
Diplomats and analysts believe that the mile-long runway is intended for arms shipments, probably from China, for which troops loyal to President Robert Mugabe would pay on the spot with gemstones from the Chiadzwa diamond mines.

UN: Israel

  • The Israeli military said today it has reprimanded two high-ranking officers for approving the firing of artillery shells toward a UN compound during the Gaza Strip war last year — the first admission of any high-level wrongdoing during the offensive.
Israel announced the punishment in a document submitted to the United Nations last Friday in response to a UN report that has accused Israel’s military of committing war crimes. Israel is trying to stave off the report’s central threat of launching war crimes proceedings if it does not carry out an independent investigation into the military’s conduct during the fighting.

China

  • China said on Monday it made no concessions on Tibetan sovereignty during talks with envoys of the Dalai Lama over the future of the region — the first such negotiations in more than a year.
“(China’s) national interests are inviolable and there is no room for discussion on the issues of national and territorial sovereignty,” said a government statement on the talks, quoted by the official Xinhua news agency.
The statement marked China’s first confirmation that the secretive talks had concluded, and came as the Tibetan spiritual leader’s envoys returned to their exile base in India.
