Iran

  • The United States used “online warfare” to stir up unrest in Iran after last year’s elections, the Chinese Communist party newspaper claimed today, hitting back at Hillary Clinton’s speech last week about internet freedom.
An editorial in the People’s Daily accused the US of launching a “hacker brigade” and said it had used social media such as Twitter to spread rumours and create trouble.

Davos

  • The police commander in charge of security at the World Economic Forum in Davos has been found dead in his hotel room, local authorities have said. Markus Reinhardt, 61, had been head of police in the Swiss canton of Graubunden since 1984. “All indications point to a suicide,” local police said in a statement. Police captain Marcus Suter will take over the security operation in Davos, where the five-day forum starts on Wednesday. Some 2,500 business and political leaders from around the world are expected to attend.

Kazakhstan

  • On the eve of a conference here Thursday on Afghanistan, NATO has signed an agreement with the foreign minister of Kazakhstan allowing transit through Kazakhstan of supplies for NATO and coalition forces.
Meanwhile, a senior U.S. official said Wednesday in London that a separate July agreement between U.S. President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev allowing flights of U.S. military equipment through Russian airspace to Afghanistan, is set up but “running more slowly than we would have liked.”

Honduras

  • Honduran ex-President Zelaya leaves Brazilian Embassy, heads to exile 7 months after coup.

Canada

  • Canada’s privacy watchdog on Wednesday announced another investigation into Facebook after fielding a fresh complaint about a new tool launched on the popular social-networking website.
The probe comes on the heels of a sweeping investigation last year, in which Canada’s privacy commissioner asked Facebook to change a number of policies and practices to comply with the country’s private-sector privacy law.
Facebook agreed to make changes, but the California-based company is now once again on the radar of Canada’s privacy czar.
