Syria objected to a reference recognizing Israel’s selection last month as 2010 chair of a global effort to end the trade in blood diamonds. “Israel exploits trafficking in diamonds in Africa and other countries in the world in order to fund transactions to sell arms and to promote internal troubles in certain countries, thereby involving children in armed conflict,” said Bashar Ja’afari, Syrian ambassador to the UN. The Syrian bid failed and the resolution, which welcomes programs of the past year on efforts to prevent blood diamonds entering the legitimate diamond market, passed.
Abkhazia
In Abkhazia, initial results have declared separatist leader Sergei Bagapsh winner by a notable margin in a presidential election slammed by the opposition as fraudulent. The three other candidates have complained of widespread fraud and violation. None of the candidates were in favor of a restoration of Georgian rule in the strip of land along east coast of the Black Sea. Russia hailed on Sunday the results of the presidential elections in the former Georgian republic of Abkhazia, which re-elected incumbent President Sergei Bagapsh.
