US: Minot AFB
The men and women of the 91st Missile Wing at Minot Air Force Base became part of Air Force Global Strike Command Tuesday. The nuclear-capable assets the intercontinental ballistic missiles of Air Force Space Command now come under Global Strike Command as of Tuesday. Air Combat Command’s nuclear-capable assets bombers, which include the 5th Bomb Wing and its B-52s at Minot AFB come under Global Strike Command Feb. 1.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin says he will think about running for the Russian presidency again in 2012, and says his decision will hinge on Russia’s recovery from the global financial crisis.

The Honduran congress voted against reinstating the ousted president Manuel Zelaya, quashing the last hope of reconciliation after five months of crisis. It refused by a majority of 111 to 14 to grant Zelaya a token return to power before his term ends next month, showing a flinty resolve to uphold a June coup despite international condemnation.

A controversial bid to rename the country’s Arctic sea route the “Canadian Northwest Passage” has passed almost unanimously in the House of Commons, a surprising outcome after Inuit leaders and opposition MPs argued the renaming process initially lacked input from the North’s aboriginal inhabitants. But an amendment to the private member’s bill that promises recognition of an additional Inuktitut name for the disputed waterway appears to have allayed concerns, allowing all MPs to support the symbolic boost to Canada’s Arctic sovereignty…many Inuit living along the sea route know the passage as “Tallurutik” — an Inuktitut word derived from linear landscape features along the coast of Devon Island and an associated tattooing ritual among Inuit women.
