How true the story is, I have no idea, but IMO the sabotage is more likely to have come from the US end. The US, and Dulles in particular, I believe, wanted the USSR to know that the US could see anything they did. The one way to do that was to have the U2 come down to a level where it could be seen. (The same sort of thing has happened with 'crashes' of US planes over Chinese territory). Also, with so many US spies in Russia at the time (Oswald was one of about 17, at least. I'd have to check the numbers as it's been a while since I've read that number) there was a hope that it (the U2 event) would trigger a mirror event in the USSR and thereby give the US fresh intelligence. How much of that came to pass I don't know, but the USSR definitely did get a good look at what the US was capable of.

I am 63 years old now. I distinctly remember reading in the Readers' Digest the account of the U2 flight. It must have be between 1962 and 1964.
It said that one or two powerful magnetic screws were put in place of the screws which held the altimeter. As a result the needle was affected and it showed higher altitude than actual. So Powers was flying at around 40,000 when he was shot down. The screws were placed by a service man at Peshawar, financed by the Soviets. (Please verify the truth of this story and let me know). Search the archives of The Readres' Digest.
